![]() I think Lynn is a sleeper for this job, and it would also be hilarious if the Trojans take UCLA’s defensive coordinator after only one season of him being with the Bruins. Just imagine what he could do with Lincoln Riley’s portal recruiting, especially with players like sophomore defensive tackle Bear Alexander. What Lynn has done in only his first season with the Bruins is incredibly impressive. ![]() What I would do for the second-best rush defense, alas. The Bruins are also tied for the 13th best scoring defense, allowing just over 16 points per game. UCLA ranks 13th in the country in total defense as well as second in rush defense. Don’t get me wrong, the Bruins have some stars, but what he’s doing is remarkable with a group that on paper is much worse than the Trojans. Lynn’s defense is incredibly impressive for the talent he is given at UCLA. One guy I’ve had my eye on for a while now is none other than USC’s rival defensive coordinator: D’Anton Lynn. It would be hard to sway Muschamp away from his comfortable, national championship contending Bulldogs, but I believe with a salary boost and the label as “defensive coordinator” over co-defensive coordinator, he could be brought over to the West Coast. Muschamp can clearly recruit well and is a great coach it seems like a win-win to me. USC is phenomenal at recruiting skill position players, but what the Trojans need is some guys doing the dirty work in the trenches. The Georgia Bulldogs have ranked in the top five in recruiting classes each of the last five years, and a whole bunch of those five-star recruits they bring in are defensive players. While Muschamp’s defensive mind is impressive, one of the main reasons I’m drawn to him as defensive coordinator for the Trojans is his recruiting. Seeing as Muschamp is still not even the full defensive coordinator, I bet he’s looking for a higher-paying and more exclusive job. The Bulldogs beat down a pretty great offense in TCU last season during the 2023 national championship game, allowing the Horned Frogs to score only once the entire game. Muschamp’s squad ranks ninth in total defense and seventh in scoring defense. Georgia had arguably the best defensive unit in college football over the last three seasons, and this year is no different. Muschamp has taken over for current Oregon head coach Dan Lanning. Muschamp is currently the co-defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs. Nevertheless, I think Leonhard would be a phenomenal hire, and his resume speaks for itself. They are very different to plan for as a defensive coordinator, so playing alongside a completely different offense may take some adjusting. Wisconsin ran a very run-heavy offense while he was there, while USC runs an air raid offense, which means a whole lot of passing. My concern would be that he would be playing alongside a different type of offense. ![]() Leonhard has an impressive defensive resume, and I think he’d fit right in alongside Lincoln Riley. In 2021, Wisconsin’s defensive stats were even more impressive, as his team ranked first in total defense, fourth in points per game allowed and second in allowed yards per play, allowing a measly 4.1 yards per play to opposing offenses.įor comparison to this year’s USC defense, the Trojans rank 120th in total defense. In 2022, Leonhard’s Badgers ranked 11th in the country in total defense, ninth in rush defense and 21st in scoring defense, allowing only 20.2 points per game. Leonhard was the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin for six seasons before electing to not join new head coach Luke Fickell’s staff and instead taking a job as a senior analyst at Illinois. Leonhard, in my opinion, should be the clear-cut No. Here are some names I hope are swirling around head coach Lincoln Riley’s and athletic director Jennifer Cohen’s heads. ![]() Yet, I am more curious to see who will be named defensive coordinator starting next season. It has already been announced that defensive line coach Shaun Nua and linebackers coach Brian Odom will be interim co-defensive coordinators for the remainder of the year. However, with the firing of Grinch, it leaves a massive hole in the Trojans’ coaching staff. Lincoln Riley must have finally read my article from last year, calling for Grinch’s dismissal after the collapse against Tulane. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has been fired. It took a while, but the root of USC’s defensive issues has been dug up.
